Where can I get cheap moving boxes from...

So you're moving home and need to find some cheap or even better still, some free moving boxes !!
Picture
There are various options for buying cheap boxes in person or online, as well as, ways of getting FREE boxes too.
How, well I'll tell you.....
First a few tips....
  • When packing up your things, mostly use Small or Medium sized boxes where possible unless you have a big item or things that are bulky but are lightweight. Using and filling up large boxes with lots or heavy things can often mean they become unliftable due to the weight.
  • If you have lots of books, place them into a number of smaller boxes. The removal man will always lift 2 boxes at a time if he's able to do so, but if you use one bigger box, he may not be able to lift it, need a second guy to help him, or worse still it could spill open if there is too much weight in it.
  • Always Tape the bottom of the boxes with strong parcel tape, don't just fold them or use standard cellotape. They will come open and your things will spill all over the floor.
  • Remember when you stack them up, try get the heavier boxes at the bottom to help prevent crushing. Your Man with a Van will do the same when loading them onto the removal van.
  • Don't be concerned about finding boxes with handles, they are rarely strong enough and often tear when used, a professional removal man won't pick up your boxes by the handles anyway due this issue
  • Utilise all the available space in the box, half filled boxes squash easier than full boxes.
  • You should fill your boxes to the top without preventing the top being folded or taped closed, lots of open top boxes mean they can't be stacked on top of each other.
  • When placing fragile items in boxes, use some kind of packing like small bubble wrap, or a tea towel or some thin clothing to prevent fragile items tapping against each other. Then write FRAGILE on the box in various obvious places.
  • If you have bottles or things that may leak in a box, write on the box in Various Places This Way Up with a big arrow pointing upwards. Boxes are sometimes put on their side or on their end to fill a space on the moving van. Make it clear to the removal man that things will spill if not kept upright.
Free Moving Boxes....
Getting boxes for free can be a bit hit and miss, so you may need start to look for them way in advance of your moving date. Here are some ideas for you...

Ask your local corner shop if they have any boxes or can keep some boxes for you the next time they restock, they are often happy to help as it says them disposing off them themselselves.

You can try your local supermarket, most mornings around 9am, visit the fruit & veg area. As they replenish the shelves there are often free empty carboard boxes available that you can take to use for your move.
These boxes may may not be exactly what you are looking for and will come in various shapes and sizes. If you're luck you can find some strong enclosed boxes that the bananas have arrived in but sometime they only have shallower open top trays which may not be ideal and are only suitable for packing limited things, but they will be better than nothing and they are after all, Free.

Another option is to ask on local Facebook groups to see if anyone has any empty boxes available after their own house move. You may need to put a couple of posts up on different days at different times to reach the right person, but there is often someone else disposing of their old moving boxes after their own house move and it saves them a trip to the tip to get rid of them.

Buying Moving Boxes....
The other option is to buy boxes. Yes it costs money but you an choose the size you want, the quantity you want and you also get them when you need them, especially if its a last minute move.

When you buy moving boxes make sure you buy Double Walled Boxes, these are thicker and stronger boxes. They protect your items better, and they stack better in your home and in the moving van with less chance of crushing or crumpling.

Ebay and Amazon have lots of people selling packing materials including boxes in various sizes. Its easy to do a quick search but check the quality, sizes and quantities of the listings and watch out for any additional posting costs.

Ikea have some excellent and strong carboard boxes for moving home, they can be ordered online and usually available instore, and whilst you're there, buy some of the large blue bags, these come in handy for soft items like bedding & clothing or bits and bats that you need to gather up and these bags come in handy later and can be used for various things after your move too.

If you are in or close to the Shipley area of Bradford, ASC Direct supply removal boxes/kits which you can order over the phone or online and collect yourself saving delivery costs.
But they also do Online and Delivery Orders.
